Director

The director gives the creative vision for the show.  They provide the overall understanding of the script and offer suggestions for the design teams.  As well, the director will cast the show and conduct rehearsals. They are the first audience; they give commentary about the characters and or/movement onstage, what works and what may need development or change.

Responsibilities

Preproduction

  • With the producer, set a budget and timelines

  • Work with designers (costume, set, props, lights, special effects) to establish requirements and ideas for the designs.

  • Conduct auditions and cast the show

  • Research and prepare for the show.  The director should have a strong knowledge of the script and what they would like to see.

During rehearsals

  • With the stage manager, set rehearsals (what scenes will be worked on) and communicate the schedule with the actors and production team

  • Give the work onstage your full attention – watch, listen and feel

  • Offer suggestions for improvement and offer words of praise

  • Pay attention to characters, relationships, dialogue, space/composition, pace, mood and intentions

During show

  • Your work is virtually over.  Be there for the actors and production crew as their friend and support.

  • Submit your receipts
